Unintentional Weight Loss

People suffering from illness and severe diseases usually experience sudden weight loss as a symptom. Some of these are:

  • Cancer
One of the most notorious diseases known to fatally cause idiopathic or unexplained weight loss. One-third of idiopathic cases are secondary to malignancy. Some of the most common cancers include: gastrointestinal, ovarian, prostate, pancreatic and lung malignancies.
  • AIDS
AIDS is up there with cancer in being one of the most fatal causes of deadly weight loss.
  • Gastrointestinal disorders
This is actually the one of the most common causes of unintentional weight loss along with AIDS and cancer. Though this is not as fatal as the two other diseases, illness affects the digestive system and automatically causes weight loss to the patient.
  • Infection
Fungal illness, endocarditis and other parasitic diseases also cause sudden weight loss.
  • Renal Disease
People suffering from uremia usually lose their appetite and experience emesis and nausea leading to weight loss.
  • Connective tissue disease
  • Pulmonary disease
  • Cardiac disease
  • Neurological disease such as dementia
  • Stress
  • Some medication has weight loss as its side effect.

Intentional weight loss

Most of us understand this with passion. This is weight loss with requires great effort. Some of us do this for vanity, some of us for health reasons.

People suffering from obesity are often advised to undergo weight loss. This is to help lower the risk of developing diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, osteoarthritis and certain types of cancer.

Intentional weight loss occurs when the human body exerts more energy in burning fats or digestion that what it is consuming from food and supplements. Nutrients absorbed from the food are stored in the body. When the body decreases its food intake, but needs fuel to work, the body uses these stored fats or muscle that leads to weight loss.

Intentional weight loss are also aspires even by people who are already in their ideal weight. Some of them do this to enhance athletic performance while some do it for vanity to improve their appearance. Being underweight however, has its risk such as lower immunity to infection, osteoporosis, and difficulty in regulating body temperature, decreased muscle strength, eating disorders and even death.

The Slowly but Surely and the Fast and the Furious

There are two main methods in achieving weight loss. Therapeutic weight loss techniques require the person to modify eating habits and increase physical activities. This method takes time and patience but has a more long-term effect and overall healthier benefits to the body.

Dieticians often advise patients to limit calorie intake and increase fiber intake to aid in digestion. Even the style and type of food you eat must be watched. Sometimes, surgery may even be needed for severe cases. Weight loss supplements may also be included in this method but must be strictly observed by specialists, otherwise, it may cause more harm to the person.

Crash dieting occurs when a person abruptly and drastically changes his or her diet in more than 12 hours. The ultimate goal is to lose a significant pounds in a very short time. Though a loss in weight may occur the dangers that can happen to crash dieters are no joke. That is why professionals advise against this method. Note that crash dieting is different from fasting. Fasting occurs periodically and in cycles while crash dieting can be done anytime.

According to the Academy Nutrition and Dietetics, there are no food or pills that can burn fat in an instant. So if you would like to have a great body, work hard for it. Hit the gym. Avoid McDonald’s for a few months (for life, if you can), remove the whipped cream on your next Starbucks frappe. These are little sacrifices you do will make you appreciate the effects more.
